AceShowbiz - Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear's untitled "9-1-1" spin-off is reportedly eyeing Hawai'i as its backdrop. Despite initially considering Las Vegas, the 50th state has become the top contender due to its tropical allure and cultural charm.
The franchise's other installments, "9-1-1" and "9-1-1: Lone Star", have been set in Los Angeles and Austin, respectively. Hawai'i would join a long list of shows set in the islands, including "Rescue: HI-Surf, "Gilligan's Island" and "Magnum P.I."
However, filming in Hawai'i is not without its financial challenges. First responder dramas, such as the "9-1-1" shows, are among the most expensive to produce, often featuring star-studded casts and elaborate effects. The cancellation of "Lone Star" and "NCIS: Hawai'i" underscores the financial constraints in producing such shows in Hawai'i.
ABC may need to explore options to mitigate these costs, such as hiring less expensive actors or reducing production quality. However, this could potentially compromise the show's familiarity and appeal to viewers.
