AceShowbiz - Kim Kardashian has publicly called for the reconsideration of the life sentences imposed on Erik and Lyle Menendez. In an op-ed published on NBC News, she shared her belief that the brothers are not "monsters" but victims of abuse who deserve a chance at freedom.
Kardashian visited the Menendez brothers at a California prison and came away convinced that they have been unfairly punished. She noted their good conduct in prison, their work with hospice inmates, and their pursuit of higher education.
Kardashian argued that the brothers were denied a fair trial due to societal biases against male victims of sexual abuse and homophobia at the time of their conviction. She highlighted the fact that the abuse evidence was deemed inadmissible in their second trial and that the prosecutor mocked their defense arguments.
She also criticized the media for sensationalizing the case and portraying the brothers as heartless killers. "The media turned the brothers into monsters and sensationalized eye candy," she wrote.
Kardashian believes that the Menendez case would have had a different outcome if it were tried today, as there is now greater understanding of male sexual abuse and trauma. She cited a statement from 24 Menendez family members, including siblings of their parents, who also support their release.
Her advocacy coincides with the announcement of a resentencing hearing for the brothers scheduled for November 29. Kardashian expressed hope that the outcome of this hearing will lead to their release, a new trial, or a reduction in their sentence.
"We owe it to those little boys who lost their childhoods, who never had a chance to be heard, helped, or saved," she concluded.
