AceShowbiz - Susie Essman has entered the chat. In a new interview, the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star shared her two cents on the controversy surrounding Emmys' decision to name "Hacks" as the winner of best comedy series over "The Bear".
When asked by a TMZ photographer on Monday, September 16 about the controversy, in which people called out The Academy for putting "The Bear" in the comedy category instead of drama. While Susie agreed that "The Bear" is a drama series, she stressed that it's not the show's crew's fault.
"Well, the thing is it's not their fault that they were put into that category," the comedian said. " 'The Bear' is a terrific show and it's not 'The Bear' 's fault they were put into the category. I don't - I guess it's The Academy's fault. I don't know."
Susie further explained, " 'The Bear' is a terrific show, but it's a drama. It's a drama, essentially, with a laugh, you know, now and then. That's up to The Academy. I think because it's a half hour, they put it in the comedy category, but they have to fix that because it's just not fair."
"We worked so hard and I know 'Hacks' people and 'Abbott Elementary', [Quinta Branson], she's so fantastic. All of us comedians worked so hard to make people laugh and we should be judged against each other, not against something that's doing something completely different," she continued.
Referring to "Hacks" star Hannah Eibender's mom and "Saturday Night Live" legend Laraine Newman, Susie added, "So Laraine is right about that." She also praised Hannah, who lost best supporting actress in a comedy series award to "The Bear" star Liza Colon-Zayas, saying, "I think she gets better every season and she, you know, like so many people deserves it."
In addition to Susie, Jon Bernthal also commented on the hotly debated topic. Jon, who won his first Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for the show, said when asked about the controversy, "I'm just happy for everybody. They're great people."
At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, "Hacks" came out as the surprise winner for Outstanding Comedy Series, topping "The Bear" that dominated the comedy categories that night. The victory sparked controversy as some people expected "The Bear" to take home the prize, while some others insisted that "The Bear" wasn't even a comedy series.
