AceShowbiz - Laraine Newman, the original cast member of "Saturday Night Live," sparked controversy with her angry social media post targeting "The Bear" while the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards was still ongoing. The post came after her daughter, Hannah Einbinder, lost out to Liza Colon-Zayas of "The Bear" in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category.
"F**. THE. BEAR!!!!!" Newman posted along with several exclamation points. She argued, "I think the Bear is a great show but IMHO it's not a comedy- not even a dark comedy."
Prior to the awards, Newman had expressed her frustration over "The Bear" being nominated in the same category as "Hacks," in which her daughter stars. "Every time I think about 'The Bear' being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing," she had written.
Newman's foul-mouthed post drew mixed reactions, with some agreeing with her opinion and others criticizing her for taking to social media. She eventually deleted the initial post, acknowledging that it was "not her best moment."
Meanwhile, Emmys host Eugene Levy poked fun at the debate surrounding "The Bear" comedic status during the opening monologue. "The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy in history," he said before quipping, "But in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes."
Although Hannah Einbinder didn't win, "Hacks" ultimately won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, along with Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Jean Smart.
