AceShowbiz - The Deetz family has once again summoned the mischievous demon Beetlejuice, this time to the tune of a massive $110 million debut weekend in theaters. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is the second-biggest September domestic debut ever, trailing only the 2017 horror adaptation "It".
The Tim Burton-directed film follows three generations of the Deetz family as they return to their haunted Winter River home after a tragedy. Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia, who clashes with her rebellious daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) as Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) returns to wreak havoc.
Internationally, the film has earned an additional $35.4 million, for a combined worldwide total of $145.5 million.
Among the weekend's other heavy-hitters, "Deadpool & Wolverine" remains the seventh biggest MCU release but holds the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. "Reagan", the biopic tracing the life of the 40th American president, came in third, while "Alien: Romulus" added $3.9 million to its domestic total.
Rounding out the top five is "It Ends With Us", the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel.
Despite the end of the summer blockbuster slate, the box office has received a strong boost from the start of spooky season. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is a testament to the enduring popularity of the original film and the appeal of Michael Keaton's iconic character. It will be interesting to see how the sequel performs in the coming weeks, as more horror films enter the market.
