AceShowbiz - Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have become the latest artists to achieve EGOT status, winning the Emmy for Best Original Music and Lyrics for their "Only Murders in the Building" composition, "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?" alongside Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
The duo, who won the trophy on the second night of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys, beat out fellow nominees Sara Bareilles, the "Saturday Night Live" team, Hans Zimmer and John Hawkes. Pasek and Paul had previously won an Oscar for "City of Stars" from "La La Land", a Tony for "Dear Evan Hansen" and a Grammy for the show's cast album.
Pasek and Paul wrote the "Pickwick Triplets" patter song for the Broadway-set third season of "Only Murders in the Building", performed by Steve Martin. The duo collaborated with Shaiman and Wittman to create a song that felt authentic to the musical's world.
With their Emmy win, Pasek and Paul join an elite club of EGOT recipients that includes Richard Rodgers, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Robert Lopez, John Legend, Viola Davis and Elton John. They are also the youngest people to ever achieve EGOT, tied with Lopez at age 39.
Pasek and Paul are the second team to EGOT as a group, after Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. They are also the first creative team to win all four awards together. The duo's journey began with their 2017 Oscar win for "City of Stars". In 2017, they won a Tony for "Dear Evan Hansen" and a Grammy in 2018 for the musical's cast album.
Pasek and Paul continue to write for theater, film and television, with upcoming projects including Disney's live-action "Snow White" and Pharrell Williams' "Atlantis". Their work has cemented their place as one of the most successful songwriting duos of their generation.
