In a stunning night of wins, the Oscars secured their first variety special Emmy in over three decades while 'SNL' became the biggest winner with a total of six awards.

AceShowbiz - The 2024 edition of the Oscars made headlines by winning the outstanding variety special (live) at the Creative Arts Emmys, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. This win marks the first time the Oscars have clinched the top program Emmy in variety since 1991. The Oscars had previously won this prestigious honor in 1979 and 1988.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time, and executive produced by Raj Kapoor, Molly McNearney, and Katy Mullan, the iconic event prevailed over strong contenders such as "The Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show Starring Usher", "The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady", and recent editions of the Grammys and the Tonys.

One of the night's standout achievements came from Rickey Minor, who won outstanding music direction for his work on the Oscars. This victory marks Minor's third win in this category, previously earning awards for "Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America" (2017) and the "Kennedy Center Honors" (2020). Minor notably competed against himself this year, having also been nominated for his work on The "46th Kennedy Center Honors".

The Oscars not only impressed with their live broadcast but also clinched two more Creative Arts Emmys for outstanding direction by Hamish Hamilton and outstanding production design for a variety special. These accolades bring the total number of Emmy Awards won by the Oscars to an impressive 63.

"Saturday Night Live" emerged as the biggest winner on the first night of the Creative Arts Emmys, taking home six awards all in technical craft categories, including directing and makeup. As a result, "SNL" has now accumulated a record-breaking 97 Primetime Emmy wins. The show is preparing to launch its 50th season this fall, cementing its legacy in television history.

Other notable winners include "Blue Eye Samurai", "Jim Henson: Idea Man", and The Oscars, each securing four awards. The Billy Joel special, "Billy Joel - The 100th Live at Madison Square Garden", received three technical awards but fell short of winning the outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) award, which was claimed by "Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic".

An edited presentation of the Creative Arts Emmys' awards from both nights will air on Saturday, September 14, at 8:00 p.m. PT on FXX, and will be available for streaming on Hulu from Sunday, September 15 through Wednesday, October 9. Meanwhile, the 76th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from the Peacock Theatre on Sunday, September 15, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET on ABC, with subsequent streaming on Hulu.
