AceShowbiz - The Hollywood adventure-comedy classic "The Goonies" has reportedly been granted the "green light" for a sequel, according to The Sun. Production is expected to commence next summer, with a potential release date in 2026 or 2027.
The sequel, which has been in talks for years, will see the return of the film's original cast, including Sean Astin (Mikey), Josh Brolin (Brand), Corey Feldman (Mouth), Jeff Cohen (Chunk) and Ke Huy Quan (Data). Sadly, John Matuszak, who played the iconic Sloth, passed away in 1989.
The original "Goonies" film, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, follows a group of children who embark on a thrilling treasure hunt to find the lost riches of One-Eyed Willy. Along the way, they encounter the Fratelli family of criminals, who are also after the treasure.
The sequel will reportedly begin development next summer, with the production team excited to "bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience." The original film's writer Chris Columbus is also involved in the project.
Warner Bros. is said to be aware of the film's cultural significance and is determined to deliver a sequel that meets the expectations of fans while also capitalizing on the current popularity of youth adventure films.
"The Goonies" holds a special place in the hearts of many who grew up in the '80s, and the news of a sequel has sparked excitement among audiences worldwide. The film's iconic scenes, such as the Truffle Shuffle, and memorable lines like "Goonies never say die!" have cemented its place in pop culture.
