AceShowbiz - In an interview with Vanity Fair, Academy Award-nominated actress Florence Pugh shared her reasons for shaving her head for the upcoming romance-drama "We Live in Time". Pugh plays Almut, a chef who is diagnosed with cancer and undergoes treatment.
Despite director John Crowley offering options for wigs and bald caps, Pugh was adamant about immersing herself fully in her character's journey. She believed that only a real-life transformation could convey the authenticity of Almut's experience.
"I just stopped him mid-sentence and I was like, 'John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done,' " Pugh explained. "And if you don't want to do it, I believe that you shouldn't be doing a story like this.' "
Pugh's decision to shave her head was met with both praise and criticism online. She dismissed rumors that she did it to regain control of her image, stating that she has always fought to control her portrayal in the media.
"Even at the beginning of my career, I was always fighting to control my image," Pugh said. "It helps me when I'm wearing less makeup because then I'm less of a sparkly thing on screen. I feel like I'm allowed to do ugly faces, like it's more acceptable."
Pugh believes that the transformation also aided her in forging a strong connection with co-star Andrew Garfield. "I felt like I was coming at it in a different way, and I had someone who could hold me and protect me in the same way that I was holding Andrew and protecting him," Pugh said. "And it was a very, very fluid language between the two of us, and that was just a very powerful thing to create with someone."
