AceShowbiz - Alicia Silverstone's fans can breathe a sigh of relief now after she left people worrying about her well-being for consuming a poisonous fruit. The actress has shared an update on social media to let everyone know that she's still with us as of Tuesday afternoon, August 20.
On Tuesday, the 47-year-old updated her Instagram page with a snapshot of her picture from what looks like a photo shoot. While the image failed to show her current condition, she assured her followers in the caption, "Alive and well! Don't worry… I didn't swallow."
Alicia shared the update on her condition after she sparked concerns among her followers with her previous video. In the initial video posted on the same platform on Monday, the Cher Horowitz depicter in the teen comedy film "Clueless" expressed her curiosity about a mystery berry that she found while she was in London.
She said in the clip that she had no idea what the orange berry was that she picked from a random bush in someone's yard during her latest U.K. adventure. "I've discovered something, and I can't figure out what it is, and I need your help," she asked her fans for help to identify it, but not before she decided to taste it.
"It's definitely not [a tomato] because of these leaves. Look at those leaves. So what the heck is this?" she continued saying. She even displayed the inside of the fruit, which was filled with seeds larger than those typically found in tomatoes. "I don't think you're supposed to eat this. It's almost like a pepper," she added after tasting it.
"What the heck is this!? I'm in England and can't figure it out," Alicia reiterated her question in the caption.
The comments section was quickly flooded with messages expressing concerns as many of her followers identified the berry as a Jerusalem cherry, a member of the nightshade family that is known to be toxic.
The Jerusalem cherry, or solanum pseudocapsicum, is often mistaken for a cherry tomato but can cause serious symptoms if consumed, including vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, hallucinations and heart rate issues. According to the Northern New England Poison Center, the fruit is "harmful to eat" and is best left as an ornamental plant.
"OMG NO!! Jerusalem Cherry very poisonous in the Nightshade family, Hope you are ok," one fan urgently warned. "Girl! Berries are either great or freaking poisonous! Don't eat random bush-things," another advised. Others were hoping for an update from the actress.
