AceShowbiz - Sam Neill, the beloved 76-year-old actor known for his starring role in Jurassic Park, has provided fans an update on his health following his diagnosis with stage-three blood cancer in 2022. Speaking candidly about his experience, Neill revealed how the disease and its treatment have impacted his life both personally and professionally.
The diagnosis came during a promotional tour for "Jurassic World Dominion" when Neill noticed swollen glands on his neck. He was later diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, marking the beginning of a grueling health battle.
"It just meant that every second week it was a case of forget about the weekend because that would be a bit grim," he told The Herald Sun. "But other than that, it's great to be alive and working and in beautiful places, like York."
Despite the severity of his condition, Neill quickly adopted a mindset focused on living fully and gratefully amidst the uncertainty. "I started to look at my life and realized how immensely grateful I am for so much of it," he shared with Australian Story.
Neill's son, Tim, recalled the moment they received the devastating news shortly after Sam had returned to New Zealand following the COVID-19 lockdowns. "When he hung the phone up and we sat down, and we had a little bit of a cry together. It was supposed to be a happy day. He didn't get to stay," Tim said. The situation worsened when, after initial treatments, Sam learned that the cancer had returned even more aggressively.
As conventional chemotherapy took its toll, leaving him weak and frail, Neill was placed on an experimental drug, which has fortunately kept him in remission for nearly two years. However, he remains realistic, acknowledging that the drug's effectiveness may not last indefinitely. "I'm prepared for that," Neill stated. "I know I've got it, but I'm not really interested in it. It's out of my control."
Today, Neill undergoes bi-weekly infusions, a challenging but necessary routine to manage his condition. Despite the "very grim and depressing" nature of these sessions, he maintains a positive outlook by focusing on his vineyard, grandchildren, and acting. Every morning he wakes up, he feels a deep sense of gratitude for being alive and able to continue his work in beautiful places.
Sam Neill's story is a powerful testament to resilience and the human spirit's capacity to find joy and meaning even in the face of life's greatest challenges.
