Tony Mordente, a versatile performer and director known for his roles in 'West Side Story' and numerous television shows, has passed away at the age of 88.

Born in Brooklyn in 1935, Mordente began dancing at an early age. He honed his skills at the High School of Performing Arts and American Ballet Theater School. His Broadway debut came in 1956's "Lil' Abner", where he played Lonesome Polecat.

Mordente's career took a pivotal turn when he was cast as A-Rab in the original 1957 Broadway production of "West Side Story". In the 1958 West End production, he also served as assistant choreographer to Jerome Robbins.

During the Broadway run, Mordente met and married his future wife, Chita Rivera, who played Anita. Their daughter, Lisa Mordente, followed in her parents' footsteps and became a Tony-nominated actress.

In the 1961 film adaptation of "West Side Story", Mordente played the role of Action, a short-tempered member of the Jets gang. He recalled facing backlash from his fellow Jet cast members after he began dating Rivera.

After "West Side Story", Mordente continued to work on Broadway as an actor, choreographer, and assistant choreographer. He also choreographed for television shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour".

In the 1970s, Mordente embarked on a successful career as a television director. He helmed episodes of numerous popular shows, including "Rhoda", "M*A*S*H", "Family Ties", "The A-Team", "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "7th Heaven".

Mordente leaves behind his daughters, Lisa and Adriana, as well as extended family and friends. His contributions to the worlds of theater, film and television will be fondly remembered.
