AceShowbiz - Shawn Levy may be spreading his wings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director, who has helmed the upcoming "Deadpool & Wolverine" for Disney, is now reportedly being eyed to direct the fifth "Avengers" movie.
The development is in very early stages, and Levy is not yet officially attached to the project. However, Deadline reports that Marvel has given Levy the latest script by Michael Waldron and is eager to collaborate with him again after his success with "Deadpool & Wolverine".
Destin Daniel Cretton was previously set to direct the fifth "Avengers" movie, but he backed out in November 2023. The film, which is scheduled for May 1, 2026, does not yet have a title and was originally dubbed "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty". However, that title was dropped after Jonathan Majors, cast as Kang the Conqueror, was convicted of assault.
Levy has a history of working with Marvel actors, having directed "The Adam Project" with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana and "Free Guy" with Easter eggs referencing Captain America and Hulk. He has also collaborated with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman on "The Adam Project", "Free Guy" and "Real Steel".
Marvel is reportedly planning to meet with other directors while waiting for Levy's decision. However, Levy's extensive experience with tentpole films, including "Night at the Museum", "The Pink Panther" and "Big Fat Liar", makes him a strong candidate for the high-profile "Avengers" gig.
The untitled "Avengers" movie will reportedly feature over 60 MCU characters, including Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch. Plot details are unknown, but with Jonathan Majors' departure as Kang, the central villain remains a mystery.
Levy's production company, 21 Laps, is also known for producing the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things". Levy is expected to be heavily involved as a director and executive producer for the final season of "Stranger Things" as well as a future "Star Wars" film.
