AceShowbiz - Netflix has announced the highly anticipated sequel to Adam Sandler's classic golf comedy "Happy Gilmore". During its 2024 Upfront presentation in New York City, the streaming giant revealed that Sandler would reprise his role as the titular character.

The original "Happy Gilmore", directed by Dennis Dugan, starred Sandler as a failed hockey player with anger issues who discovers his hidden talent for golf. In a desperate attempt to save his grandmother's house from foreclosure, he joins the golf tour circuit and goes up against arrogant pro Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald). The film grossed over three times its budget and became one of Sandler's most popular roles.

Rumors of a sequel have been circulating since March when Christopher McDonald hinted at Sandler's work on a screenplay. Drew Barrymore also confirmed that the project was "in process."

Netflix confirmed the sequel at its upfront presentation but did not disclose any details regarding the plot or creative team. Sources indicate that the film is still in the early stages of development.

McDonald is expected to return as Shooter McGavin, one of the most infamous sports movie villains. However, several actors from the original film have passed away, including Frances Bay (Gilmore's grandmother), Richard Kiel (Mr. Larson), Bob Barker (himself), Carl Weathers ("Chubbs"), and Joe Flaherty.

The announcement of the "Happy Gilmore" sequel comes as part of Sandler's $250 million deal with Netflix. While some of his previous Netflix productions have received negative reviews, Sandler has also earned critical acclaim for his collaborations with directors Noah Baumbach and the Safdie brothers.
