In the midst of reshaping the DC Extended Universe, the director takes to social media to address rumors and clarifies misconceptions regarding Henry Cavill's departure and the castings for the new Superman film.

AceShowbiz - James Gunn has addressed a fan conspiracy theory alleging that he always intended to replace Henry Cavill as Superman. The theory stemmed from Nathan Fillion's statement that Gunn informed him about his casting as Green Lantern during the premiere party of "The Suicide Squad" in 2021, more than a year before Gunn became co-CEO of DC Studios.
However, Gunn clarified on Threads that Fillion misspoke and that the conversation actually took place at the premiere party for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3". He further explained that when he was hired to write the new "Superman" film, it was always presented as a reboot, not a replacement for Cavill's Superman. Therefore, he questioned why he would have lied about his plans at "The Suicide Squad" premiere.
Gunn has been actively responding to various rumors and theories surrounding his plans for the DC Universe. He and his co-CEO, Peter Safran, are tasked with overhauling the franchise on the big screen. This includes recasting Superman, with David Corenswet now set to portray the Man of Steel.
Amid the studio shakeup, Cavill briefly reprised his role as Superman in "Black Adam" in 2022. However, Gunn and Safran's decision to reboot the character led to Cavill's exit. Corenswet's Superman film, written and directed by Gunn, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
