The 'About Damn Time' hitmaker channels the 'West Side Story' actress' viral 'cringe' and 'awkward' opening ceremony at the awards show during her concert in Amsterdam.

AceShowbiz - Lizzo made a playful reference to Ariana DeBose's controversial opening performance at the 2023 BAFTA Awards. The "About Damn Time" hitmaker recreated the "West Side Story" actress' viral rap during her latest show.

The 34-year-old singer recreated the 32-year-old actress' viral rap at the awards show during her Amsterdam concert on Thursday, February 23. While surrounded by her dancers, the songstress told her fans to "shake it off" before giving a quick little shimmy and adding, "Angela Bassett did the thing, shake it off." The moment, which was captured in a TikTok video, had the audience cheering and laughing.

Over the weekend, Ariana became a meme after she performed a cover of Eurythmics' "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" and Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" at the 2023 BAFTAs. She inserted her own rap in which she name-dropped some female nominees, including Ho-Yeon Jung, Dolly De Leon, Kerry Condon, Carey Mulligan, Emma Thompson, Ana De Armas, Danielle Deadwyler, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.

"All the ladies in the room/ supporting and leading all here, I presume/ Ho-Yeon Jung, Dolly De/ Kerry and Carey with a C/ Dame Emma, I'm so fond/ Ana, girl, you're great in 'Blonde'/ Danielle D, you broke my heart/ Michelle, I've loved you from the start," Ariana rapped. "Angela Bassett did the thing/ Viola Davis my 'Woman King'/ Blanchett Cate, you're a genius/ Jamie Lee you are all of us."

The rap, unfortunately, wasn't well received and after intense internet criticism. Following the backlash, Ariana deleted her Twitter account. However, she did like and commented on an Instagram post that assembled several of the top memes of her song, gushing, "Honestly I love this." She also shared a cryptic quote on her Instagram Stories as an apparent response to her haters. "Babygirl [sic], in a world full of choices, choose yourself," read the message, which was originally shared by the @BossBabeCorner account.

In her first interview since the awards show, Ariana spoke to Zoe Ball on her Radio 2 "Breakfast Show" and poked fun at the backlash by saying the host was "one of the few" who loved her rap performance. She also said that she was contacted by BAFTAs bosses asking her to open the ceremony with a special performance and explained that she was told her performance would "celebrate women." She went on adding that she "had a blast" despite viewers' negative reaction.
