The Columbian singer, who sang the hit theme song 'Waka Waka' at the 2010 South Africa World Cup, will not be appearing at the opening ceremony of the tournament on November 20.

AceShowbiz - Shakira will not be performing at the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Colombian singer, who sang the smash-hit theme song "Waka Waka" at the 2010 South Africa World Cup, was reportedly "never in talks" to hit the stage.

The "Hips Don't Lie" songstress had faced heavy criticism from fans in recent days as rumors claimed that she's set to perform at the opening ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, November 20. Following the intense backlash, it's reported that she has pulled out of performing at the ceremony.

On Wednesday, November 16, a source close to Shakira clarified to Metro U.K. that the 45-year-old singer "was never in talks to perform" at the opening ceremony. The so-called insider further suggested the unfounded rumors may have come from the opening ceremony organizers creating a list of artists they would like to perform, which may have caused similar confusion with Dua Lipa.

As for Dua, she recently released a statement confirming she was not performing at the World Cup and had never "been involved in any negotiation to perform." The "Levitating" singer added she looked forward to visiting Qatar "when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup."

The 2022 World Cup has proved massively controversial due to Qatar's human rights record, the mistreatment and deaths of migrant workers and the fact same-sex relationships are illegal.

Due to the host country's anti-LGBTQ stance, Nicki Minaj also faced backlash as she's appearing on the tournament anthem. Despite receiving criticism, the Young Money rapper announced on Instagram that she's working on the global record alongside Maluma and Myriam Fares. Her appearance marks the first female rapper to appear on a World Cup anthem.

"#MTVEMA's #BestHIPHOPArtist #BestSONG [Super Freaky Girl] Won 2 fan voted awards tonight. Thank you Barbz. I love you so much. Now who's READY for 11.18.22," so the Trinidadian femcee wrote on Instagram while teasing the track titled "Tukoh Taka". The song will be released on Friday, November 18.
