With the $1 billion milestone, the Tom Holland-starring superhero movie is also the third-fastest film to gross $1 billion, following 'Avengers: Endgame' (5 days) and 'Avengers: Infinity War' (11 days).

AceShowbiz - Peter Parker continues to climb to the top of the North American box office. Despite the spread of Omicron variant of the coronavirus, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" has further proven that it's a global phenomenon by hitting the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office on Sunday, December 26.

After just 12 days, the Tom Holland-starring movie collects an estimated $81.5 million in the U.S. and Canada. It makes the smash movie's two-week domestic total now stand at at $467.3 million. Meanwhile, it racks $587.1 million more from international markets, bringing its current cumulative worldwide gross at $1.05 billion which is impressive considering that the movie hasn't even opened in China yet.

With the $1 billion milestone, "No Way Home" is the first Hollywood film to do it since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" back in December 2019. Additionally, the superhero movie becomes the first movie to reach the highest ever for a Hollywood film released in December.

The opening weekend is also the highest for a "Spider-Man" film as well as the highest ever earned by a Sony Pictures release. It is also the third-fastest film to gross $1 billion, following "Avengers: Endgame" (5 days) and "Avengers: Infinity War" (11 days).

"This weekend's historic Spider-Man: No Way Home results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve," said Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO, in a statement of the record-breaking weekend.

Rothman added, "All of us at Sony Pictures are deeply grateful to the fabulous talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that produced such a landmark film."

As for the rest of Top 5 on this week's box office, Universal's "Sing 2" claims the No. 2 spot on the domestic charts. Starring Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson among others, the PG-rated animated musical earned $23.76 million from 3,892 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It pulls in an additional $24.8 million from overseas, bringing its total worldwide gross to roughly $65.8 million.

"The Matrix Resurrections" trails behind at No. 3 with $22.5 million earned in North America market. The fourth movie of "The Matrix" franchise, which doesn't really perform well in domestic market, fares better overseas with additional $47.3 million, making its worldwide cume stand at $69.8 million.

Occupying No. 4 is "The King's Man", which is the third entry in Matthew Vaughn's violent "Kingsman" spy series. The R-rated flick starring Ralph Fiennes nabs $10 million in North American theaters its first five days. It brings in an additional $6.9 million abroad, bringing its global box-office total to $16.9 million.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Lionsgate's "American Underdog". The PG-rated sports drama, which chronicles the story of real-life NFL star Kurt Warner, opens to $6.2 million after two days of release.
