'Raya and the Last Dragon' and 'Encanto' Lead Nominations of 2022 Annie Awards

Disney dominates the list of nominees with 10 nods for 'Raya' and 9 nominations for 'Encanto', while Pixar's 'Luca' and Sony/Netflix's 'The Mitchells vs. The Machine' are tied with 8 apiece.

AceShowbiz - ASIFA-Hollywood has unveiled the nominations for its 49th annual Annie Awards. Announced on Tuesday, December 21, the list sees Walt Disney Animation Studios' domination with "Raya and the Last Dragon" and "Encanto" as the top contenders.

"Raya" bags 10 nominations and "Encanto" follows close behind with 9 nominations. Meanwhile, Pixar's "Luca" and Sony Pictures Animation/Netflix's "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" are tied with 8 nods apiece.

All four movies are up for Best Feature prize, with Illumination's "Sing 2", which only scores that one nomination across all categories. "Raya" also lands nods in Best FX - Feature, Best Character Animation, Best Music and Best Storyboarding among others, but fails to land among the Best Director nominees.

The directors of "Belle", "Flee", "Encanto", "Luca" and "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" are nominated in the directing category. Meanwhile, "Belle", "Flee", "Luca", "Raya and the Last Dragon" and "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" score a nod each in the writing category.

"Belle" and "Flee" are additionally nominated for Best Animated Independent Feature along with "Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko", "Pompo the Cinephile" and "The Summit of the Gods".

In TV fields, "Arcane", "Bob's Burgers", "Love", "Death + Robots", "Star Wars: Visions" and "Tuca & Bertie" eye the coveted prize for Best TV/Media - General Audience, while "Amphibia", "Carmen Sandiego", "Dug Days", "Maya and the Three" and "We the People" are facing against each other in the Best TV/Media - Children category.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony on Saturday, February 26, 2022. "In spite of everything or maybe because of what we and the world around us have been through for nearly two years, we all want to return to some sort of normal," said Frank Gladstone, executive producer of the Annie Awards.

"2021 brought another increase in Annie Awards submissions, ASIFA memberships and ongoing sponsorships," he added, "so we are planning to return to UCLA's Royce Hall for an in-person event with all the trimmings."
