Box Office: 'F9' Still Rules on 4th of July Weekend, 'Boss Baby 2' and 'Forever Purge' Debut Strong

The three Universal Pictures movies dominate the domestic chart on the holiday weekend, which marks the first time the top three films gross over $10 million since March last year.

AceShowbiz - "F9" is unstoppable on its second weekend. The latest entry in the "Fast and Furious" saga reigns over the North American box office on the Fourth of July weekend with an estimated $24 million.

The Justin Lin-directed pic is expected to take in $32.7 million by the end of Monday, bringing its domestic total to $125.8 million. The Vin Diesel-starring action film has also performed well overseas and will likely surpass the $500 million mark on Monday.

In the second and third place, "The Boss Baby: Family Business" and "The Forever Purge" debut strong. "The Boss Baby" sequel earned approximately $17.3 million on its opening weekend, while the fifth and final film in "The Purge" franchise raked in an estimated $12.8 million.

It marks the first time the top three movies grossed over $10 million since March 2020. All three movies are distributed by Universal Pictures.

The studio made smart moves with the three pics' release dates as each of them caters to different audience bases. "F9", a PG-13 action movie, attracted both younger (51% under the age of 25) and male (57%) crowds. PG-rated family pic "The Boss Baby 2" targets audiences aged 12 and under, while 64% of the audience for R-rated horror "The Forever Purge" consisted of the coveted 18 to 34 range and was also very ethnically diverse.

"This weekend is just a great glimpse of what we do constantly. which is provide theatrical audiences with a diverse slate of quality films," said Jim Orr, Universal's head of domestic distribution. "The results speak for themselves."

He added of the varied selections they offer, "We have films for every single audience out there. We have tremendous partners, with DreamWorks and Blumhouse, and we also have some of the biggest franchises in the industry with the 'Fast' saga."

Sliding down to the fourth place is last week's runner-up "A Quiet Place Part II", which added an estimated $4.2 million on its sixth weekend. "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" is also down two spots to No. 5 with approximately $2.6 million.
