The action comedy film starring Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek easily debuts atop the chart despite not-so glowing reviews from critics as it faces no competition from other new releases.

AceShowbiz - "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" has managed to secure the top spot at North American box office on its first weekend. The action comedy film enters the chart at No. 1 with approximately $11.6 million from 3,331 U.S. venues over its first weekend.

Adding ticket sales from advanced screenings and Tuesday night previews, the movie has collected a total of $17 million over the five days. The first weekend gross, however, was below industry expectations of $15 million.

Critics' not-so-glowing reviews clearly didn't help the movie as it holds an approval rating of 25% based on 130 reviews, with an average rating of 4.4/10 on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

EW gave the film a C+, saying, "There are sure-thing blockbusters, and films bound for awards-season gold. And then there are the ones that answer to a higher calling - the in-flight 'why not?' we click when all the tiny pretzels and blue potato chips are gone and the map icon says Cleveland is still three long, empty hours away. 'The Hitman's Bodyguard' is strictly an Economy Coach experience, but it's brainlessly fun enough in a late-'90s Brett Ratner buddy-comedy kind of way."

THR wrote, "…its occasional laughs drown in a sea of action-comedy tropes that have been stale for decades." TheWrap described the movie as "a comedy with not one legitimate laugh, and an action movie where cars keep blowing up while the A-listers yell at each other, as though that were inherently amusing or entertaining."

Audiences, however, responded better to "The Hitman's Bodyguard" sequel as they gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale on CinemaScore. Mean while PostTrak reported 75% of audience members gave it a positive score, with 53% saying they would definitely recommend it.

The Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek-starring movie easily takes over the first place from "A Quiet Place Part II" as it faced no competition from other new releases, which all debut below the top 10 this week. Meanwhile, the horror sequel is forced to step down one spot to No. 2 with approximately $9.4 million.

"Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway" is up one place to No. 3 with an estimated $6.1 million, swapping places with "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" which is now fourth with additional $5.2 million. "Cruella" is holding on to the fifth spot with an estimated $5.1 million.
