The 45-year-old actor thanks his mother for never giving up on him in his speech while accepting an award for Best Actor for his role in R-rated movie 'Joker'.

AceShowbiz - Joaquin Phoenix already won big at the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards which is currently ongoing in Santa Monica, California. The actor, who won an award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his performance in "Joker" at the recent Golden Globe Awards, has snagged the coveted title of Best Actor at the Sunday, January 12 event for the same role.
The 45-year-old star got sentimental while delivering his acceptance speech, saying, "I need to thank my mom. Mom, you've always been my greatest inspiration, even when self-pity led me astray. You've never given up on me and I deeply appreciate your support." Joaquin's mother Arlyn Phoenix is an actress and social activist.
Joaquin, who is a vegan, also praised the event organizers for choosing to serve a plant-based menu. "I'd like to thank the awards for going plant-based and trying to offset our carbon footprint," he said. "I do appreciate that."
He didn't forget to thank screenwriter Scott Silver for helping him get into the role of Batman's notorious villain. "You used a superhero character to talk about childhood trauma, gun violence and mental health," he said.
Joaquin, who had pledged to wear the same outfit throughout this awards season to help the environment, stayed true to his words and recycled his Stella McCartney tux for the Critics' Choice Awards. The designer, Stella, approved his bold decision, writing on Instagram, "This man is a winner... wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet and all of its creatures. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste."
Also already bagging an award at the Sunday ceremony included Laura Dern ("Marriage Story") as Best Supporting Actress, "Dolemite Is My Name" as Best Comedy, "Parasite" as Best Foreign Language Film, "Avengers: Endgame" as Best Action Movie, "Toy Story 4" as Best Animated Feature and "The Irishman" for Best Acting Ensemble.
The event also honored the best in movie, with some winners including Bill Hader ("Barry") as Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag") for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, "When They See Us" as Best Limited Series and Toni Collette ("Unbelievable") as Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.
More winners will be announced at the show, which is currently airing live on The CW on on the East Coast.
