Months after coming out as non-binary, the 'How Do You Sleep?' hitmaker admits to be scared every day and jokes that singing live in heels has also been a challenge.

AceShowbiz - Sam Smith is still coming to terms with coming out as non-binary, admitting the "homophobic" nature of the music industry can be "scary".

The "How Do You Sleep?" hitmaker shared the news with fans in March, officially changing their pronouns to "they/them" and while it's been refreshing, the star reveals the process has also been a struggle.

"I'm scared every day ... just being my feminine self in this world that we're in," Smith tells SiriusXM Hits 1. "The music industry... can be a bit homophobic, it's a bit sexist at times."

The 27-year-old adds that making the music video for the hit track proved liberating.

"I think creatively, I'm realising now, that's the best space to be in. Because you feel joy quicker when you're being vulnerable like that," the singer added. "I've always been like that, when I've been in the club and with my friends ... but I think showing it to the world and showing it to people is a different thing, isn't it? And I finally felt safe enough to do so."

Despite the serious nature of the discussion, Smith joked that wearing heels has also been a challenge.

"I don't know how you girls do it," Smith laughed. "I can't go out dancing in heels ... singing live in heels is a bit impossible."
