The 'Shakespeare in Love' actress once said she was 'petrified' about his efforts to harass and silence her, but Weinstein's rep claims 'her narrative of her job being at stake is just gratuitous.'

AceShowbiz - Harvey Weinstein has ripped Gwyneth Paltrow after her pivotal role in the expose of his years of sexual abuse and misconduct is revealed in a new book, "She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement". Appearing on "Today" show on Monday, September 9, the book's authors and New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor said the "Iron Man" star was one of the first who spoke up about the allegations against the former movie producer.

Challenging her claim, a spokesperson for Weinstein tells Deadline, "Gwyneth Paltrow comes from Hollywood royalty. Her father was a top producer, her mother a famous actor, her godfather is Steven Spielberg. She didn't need to make movies with Harvey Weinstein; she wanted to, and she won top awards and was the top paid female actor for nearly a decade, with Weinstein."

"Her narrative of her job being at stake is just gratuitous," the spokesperson adds, seemingly referring to Paltrow's previous claim that she was afraid she was going to be fired after his deflected attempts to get her join him for a massage and possibly more.

The actress, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Shakespeare in Love" produced by Weinstein, told Kantor and Rachel Abrams in 2017 about the disgraced movie mogul's attempts to harass and silence her, "I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified." She revealed that her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt confronted the producer about his behavior.

Praising Paltrow, Twohey told Savannah Guthrie on "Today", "Gwyneth Paltrow is one of Harvey's biggest stars, and he had really kind of presented himself as kind of a godfather to her over the years. I think that many people will be surprised to discover that when so many other actresses were reluctant to get on the phone and scared to tell the truth about what they had experienced at his hands, that Gwyneth was actually one of the first people to get on the phone, and that she was determined to help this investigation-even when Harvey Weinstein showed up to a party at her house early and she was sort of forced to hide in the bathroom."

"I think Harvey Weinstein was extremely aware and extremely scared of what the implications would be if is biggest star actually ended up going on the record," Twohey added. Ashley Judd and Angelina Jolie were also among the first actresses to come forward with varying allegations against Weinstein.

Commenting on the book in general, Weinstein says in a statement through his defense attorney, " 'She Says' is all you need to know to appreciate that this book contains one sided allegations without having adequately investigated the facts of each situation. There is very different side to every story."

"She Said", set to be published on Tuesday, September 10, sheds new light on the roles of several figures who enabled Harvey's behavior and covered up his misdeeds.
