'RHONY' Alum Cindy Barshop Opens Up About Raising Transgender Son, 9, for the First Time

Talking about her son Jesse's 'poignant' reaction to Mario Lopez's controversial remarks, the Bravo star remembers him saying, 'He needs to go back to 5th grade.'

AceShowbiz - Following the controversy surrounding Mario Lopez, Cindy Barshop decided to speak up and reveal that one of her 9-year-old twins is actually a transgender. In an interview with PEOPLE, the former "The Real Housewives of New York City" star opened up about how she is raising her transgender son Jesse.

In contrary to what Mario and Candace Owens believe, Cindy stressed when a child is able to express themselves and identify their gender, age is not an issue. "When a child feels comfortable and open, identity issues are able to be discussed in the family environment," the V Spot founder told the publication. "I believe living in creating an open and positive home so they are able to express themselves."

Elsewhere during the interview, Cindy also talked about Jesse's "poignant" reaction to Mario's controversial remarks. She remembered, "He said, 'Why don't you tell him that we learn about this in 5th grade and he needs to go back to 5th grade.' It shows how evolved our children are and hopefully the adults will catch up."

This arrived after Mario suggested parents should wait until a child's "formative years" before making declarations about their gender. "If you're three years old and you're saying you're feeling a certain way, or you think you're a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it's dangerous as a parent to make that determination then," he said in an episode of "The Candace Owens Show" podcast. "It's sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on."

Mario came under fire almost immediately after the episode hit the web, prompting him to issue an apology later on. "The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were," he said. "I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful."
