Cailee Spaeny, who also stars in 'On the Basis of Sex', is reportedly in talks to play one of four outcast teenagers who pursue witchcraft for their own gain in a contemporary take on the 1996 movie.

AceShowbiz - "The Craft" reboot is close to signing an actress for its lead role. Cailee Spaeny, who plays a young Jane Ginsburg in "On the Basis of Sex", is in negotiations to play one of the witches in Columbia Pictures' remake of the 1990s cult hit.

The story follows Hannah, a newcomer at a Catholic prep high school, whose supernatural powers attract the friendship of three other young women already dabbling in witchcraft. Together they discover a power with disastrous consequences that takes them down a dark path.

Robin Tunney took the lead role in the original 1996 movie, with Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk and Rachel True starring as the other three young women. The supernatural horror movie, which was directed and co-written by Andrew Fleming, became a sleeper hit, earning $24.8 million at the domestic box office (about $50.6 million in today's dollars). According to Box Office Mojo, "The Craft" is the 11th highest-grossing film since 1980 dealing with the genre of witches.

Zoe Lister-Jones is attached to write and direct the remake, which has been billed as a contemporary take on the cult classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Columbia and Jason Blum's Blumhouse will finance the movie, with Blum serving as a producer alongside Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher's Red Wagon Entertainment. Red Wagon's Lucas Wiesendanger will executive produce, along with the original movie director, Fleming.

Production on "The Craft" remake is scheduled to start in July. No release date is set for the movie yet, while no other actors are attached to the project so far.

Spaeny has had her credits in big movies through her roles in "Pacific Rim: Uprising" and "Bad Times at the El Royale". She also landed a role as young Lynne Cheney in Adam McKay's critically-acclaimed Dick Cheney biopic "Vice (2018)" and is starring on FX's upcoming Silicon Valley drama "Devs".
