Aside from the Humanitarian Award, the slain 'Racks in the Middle' rapper will also be remembered at the Los Angeles ceremony with a tribute segment featuring DJ Khaled, YG and John Legend.

AceShowbiz - Late rapper Nipsey Hussle will be honoured with the Humanitarian Award during the BET AWARDS.

The slain star, who was shot and killed in Los Angeles in March, will be recognised during the Los Angeles ceremony on 23 June for his advocacy work.

"As a prolific artist and leader, Nipsey Hussle was zealous about driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected leader," Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President, Head of Programming at BET, said in a statement on Thursday, June 13. "His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture. We will continue to remember his advocacy and be inspired by the groundwork he set forth and his dire commitment to social change."

The 33 year old, born Ermias Asghedom, was devoted to combating gang violence in his native city of South Los Angeles prior to his death.

Previously announced award winners include Mary J. Blige, who has been selected as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement honour, and actor and director Tyler Perry who is set to receive the Ultimate Icon Award.

The ceremony will also include a star-studded tribute to Nipsey featuring DJ Khaled, YG and John Legend. He is also nominated for the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist prize.
