The 'Thor: Ragnarok' director brings up rumors of him directing 'GOTG 3' in his hilarious response to James Gunn's reinstatement.

AceShowbiz - Taika Waititi has the right reason to be disappointed with James Gunn's re-hiring for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3". The "Thor: Ragnarok" director was once rumored to be in consideration to replace Gunn as the upcoming movie's director, but Disney's latest decision has nixed Waititi's chance to land the gig.
Responding to Gunn's reinstatement, the New Zealand-born hitmaker brought up the rumors, though in a playful manner. "What the hell?? I thought I was going to do it!!" he jokingly tweeted on Friday, March 15 after news broke that Gunn would direct "GOTG 3" after all.

Those who have been aware of Waititi's sense of humor and his support for Gunn quickly caught it as a joke. However, not all are getting it. One Twitter user tried to set things straight as commenting, "People replying 'you should be doing it' don't get that Taika is joking and he’s actually very happy for James..."
Another similarly added, "Psst: For anyone not aware, Taika Waititi is a strong and vocal supporter of James Gunn. This tweet is a joke."
As reported by Deadline, after firing Gunn due to his old tweets where he made light of paedophilia and rape being unearthed, Disney's execs never met with or considered any other director for "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" despite speculation that Waititi and "Vice (2018)" helmer Adam McKay were in the mix. It seemed that the studio was aware that no one else could tackle the "GOTG" franchise besides Gunn.
His brother and "GOTG" star Sean Gunn was among those who are rejoiced over Disney's decision to reinstate Gunn. The actor, who plays Ravager Kraglin and provides the motion capture for Rocket Raccoon, shared the news on Instagram and simply wrote, "I'll just leave this here..."
"Ant-Man" director Edgar Wright also weighed in on Gunn returning to the franchise. He shared a screengrab of his text conversation with Gunn in which he wrote, "Love it!!!!"

Before Disney brought Gunn back at the helm of "GOTG 3", Warner Bros. has hired him to write and direct "The Suicide Squad". The filmmaker will still do both movies, with Disney reportedly agreeing that Gunn will work on the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" sequel after he completes his work on the follow-up to 2016's "Suicide Squad".
With "Suicide Squad 2" being scheduled to arrive in 2021, this means "GOTG 3" will not come out until 2022 at the earliest.
