Beachler set history with the win as she became the first African American to receive an Oscar in the category. She got emotional as she read her speech from her phone, thanking director Ryan Coogler, "I stand here stronger than I was yesterday because of (director) Ryan Coogler."

"Roma" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" also already won multiple awards. The Spanish language film grabbed Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film, both of which director Alfonso Cuaron received the credit for. "Thank you very much, Mexico and my family," Cuaron said as he accepted the Best Cinematography award.

As for the Queen musical biopic, it has already bagged three for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing. "Freddie Mercury brought us all together in a way, just like he did his audience," John Ottman said when collecting the third trophy for the movie.

"Black Panther", "Roma" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" are also up for Best Picture, which will be announced later at the live ceremony.
