The 45-year-old musician spent seven years in Georgia's McRae Correctional Facility after being found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine in 2011. He was released on Friday, December 07, a day earlier than scheduled.

Fans welcomed the "Champion" hitmaker, real name Mark Anthony Myrie, upon his arrival in Jamaica's capital, Kingston.

The Grammy-winner was arrested in Florida in December 2009 after he was met by a convicted drug trafficker on a flight from Spain. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment two years later and was initially set for release in February but this was moved forward.

In a statement issued to the Jamaica Gleaner ahead of his release he said: "Having survived, I want to share the good news and strength of my music. I just want to continue making music, which I've devoted my life to. I look forward to the opportunity to say a personal thanks to my fans and everyone who supported me."

His arrival back in his homeland triggered chants and cheers from Jamaicans who went to the airport to see their musical idol return.
