AceShowbiz - Naomi Watts has been cast to portray U.S. newswoman Gretchen Carlson in a limited series about disgraced former TV mogul Roger Ailes.

The actress will star in producers Tom McCarthy and Jason Blum's as-yet-untitled limited series, based on Gabriel Sherman's bestselling book "The Loudest Voice in the Room".

Watts will appear alongside Russell Crowe as the late TV executive, who died last year (17).

Ailes was largely responsible for shaping Fox News into the U.S. TV force it has become today, but his legacy and reputation were tarnished following a series of sexual misconduct allegations, which led to his departure in 2016.

Carlson was the first woman to accuse Ailes of sexual harassment and she was subsequently fired from the network.

Blum's new series, starring Crowe as the newsman and media advisor to presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, will reportedly focus on the last 10 years of his life, up to and including the role he played as an adviser to the Donald Trump presidential campaign following his departure from Fox News.

McCarthy and Blum's series is not the only Ailes project in the works - filmmaker Jay Roach is directing the movie "Fair and Balanced", which will star Naomi's best friend Nicole Kidman as Carlson and Charlize Theron as U.S. lawyer-turned-TV host Megyn Kelly.
