The 'Stronger' rapper clarifies the controversial statement he made about abolishing the 13th Amendment, claiming he misspoke when he actually meant to say 'amend.'

AceShowbiz - Kanye West is calling for American leaders to elect a "super knowledgeable" team of experts to reform the country's justice system and do away with slavery once and for all.

Addressing a controversial statement he made over the weekend about abolishing the American Constitution's 13th Amendment, which outlaws slavery, during an appearance on TMZ Live on Monday, September 01, the "Stronger" rapper told host and outlet boss Harvey Levin he misspoke, and really wanted to suggest the laws should be "amended".

Explaining himself more clearly, West said, "Abolish was the wrong language. I misspoke by saying abolish. Amend is the right language and what is awesome... what's lovely, what's beautiful about our Constitution is that we can amend it."

He then read a statement from an activist friend, called GLC, adding, "In 1865, the 13th amendment stated that no man is destined to slavery or involuntary servitude unless convicted of a crime. This translates to, in order to make a freed man a slave, all you have to do is convict them of a crime."

Attempting to explain the point he was trying to make further, Kanye then told Levin he considered many convicts to be the equivalent of slaves because they work for next to nothing.

"There are people earning eight cents a week working for companies that are privately owned and a lot of them are first-time offenders, a lot of them are (behind bars) for non-violent crimes...," he explained.

Kanye, wearing a baseball hat emblazoned with divisive U.S. leader President Donald Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again", then rambled on about the need for prison reform, before adding, "There should be a group of super knowledgeable people that come from all cultures that make the amendments on our constitution."

West created a storm of controversy after he suggested the 13th Amendment should be "abolished", with many high-profile people taking aim at the rapper.

Marvel movie star Chris Evans was among the first to blast Kanye, writing: "There's nothing more maddening than debating someone who doesn't know history, doesn't read books, and frames their myopia as virtue. The level of unapologetic conjecture I've encountered lately isn't just frustrating, it's retrogressive, unprecedented and absolutely terrifying."
