A female superhero team-up movie, 'Birds of Prey' will feature Robbie's 'Suicide Squad' character in addition to other DC Comics heroes and villains like Black Canary and Huntress.

AceShowbiz - Warner Bros. is moving forward with its other superhero project, "Birds of Prey", by announcing a release date. The female-led team-up movie, which will see Margot Robbie reprising her "Suicide Squad" role as Harley Quinn, is set to bow on February 7, 2020 in theaters across the U.S., including in IMAX theaters.
The film "follows the adventures of a revolving group of female heroes and villains and is based on the DC Comics characters and concepts created by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon." Several actresses have been eyed to play characters like Black Canary and Huntress.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw ("A Wrinkle in Time"), Jurnee Smolett-Bell ("Underground") and Janelle Monae ("Hidden Figures") are in contention for the role of Black Canary, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, Margaret Qualley ("The Leftovers"), Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("10 Cloverfield Lane") and Cristin Milioti ("How I Met Your Mother") are reportedly being considered to play Huntress a.k.a. Helena Bertinelli.
Besides the above mentioned characters, the movie will feature detective Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain. Cassandra has assumed the role of Batgirl in "Legends of the Dark Knight" (1999) and goes by the name of Orphan in current DC Comics continuity since 2016, but she will be reimagined as a 12-year-old girl for the film. Additionally, TheWrap reported that Roman Sionis a.k.a. Black Mask will be the film's antagonist.
Robbie will produce the pic via her LuckyChap Entertainment along with Kroll & Co Entertainment's Sue Kroll and Clubhouse Pictures' Bryan Unkeless. Production is slated to begin in early 2019, with Cathy Yan ("Dead Pigs") attached to direct from the script provided by Christina Hodson ("Bumblebee").
"Birds of Prey" is one of "Suicide Squad"-related projects currently in development at Warner Bros. The studio is also planning "Suicide Squad 2" and an untitled Joker and Harley Quinn project. Meanwhile, a Joker standalone movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, which is said to be separated from the DC Extended Universe, has been in production.
