Based on Peter Carey's novel of the same name, the upcoming movie will also star Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis among others.

AceShowbiz - Charlie Hunnam has joined the cast of a new movie all about notorious Australian outlaws The Kelly Gang.

Justin Kurzel, who will direct The True History of the Kelly Gang - based on Peter Carey's novel of the same name, has already lined up an impressive cast, with Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Essie Davis, Travis Fimmel, Sean Keenan, Dacre Montgomery, and Harry Greenwood on board, and now Hunnam and George MacKay have signed up.

MacKay will play escaped convict Ned Kelly, who was killed during a shoot-out with Australian police in 1880. It is unclear who Hunnam will portray, but principal photography on the project will wrap later this week, ends September 09, according to Variety.

"I feel blessed that Charlie joined this cast," Kurzel says. "He has created the most unique and distinct character for this film and it has been a real highlight to work with him. It has been a real honour working with this super talented crew and an honour to collaborate with such distinguished and talented actors."

Meanwhile, Hunnam is staying busy with several upcoming projects, including the big screen adaptation of James Frey's controversial A Million Little Pieces. The Crimson Peak star signed on to work with Sam Taylor-Johnson, her actor husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Giovanni Ribisi, and Billy Bob Thornton on the project in January. Blade Runner 2049 star Carla Juri will play the film's female lead.

The 38-year-old will also be seen in Max Winkler's Jungleland, in which he and Jack O'Connell will play brothers who travel across America as the Unbroken star's bare-knuckle boxer character prepares for one more fight.
