The legendary singer's memorial concert was staged at a waterfront park on Thursday night, August 30.

AceShowbiz - The waterfront park where Aretha Franklin's memorial concert was staged on Thursday night, August 30, is to be named after the Queen of Soul.

Detroit, Michigan Mayor Mike Duggan made the announcement during a speech at Aretha's funeral on Friday, revealing Chene Park was one of the singing legend's favourite places.

Giving a brief history of the landscaped Detroit park, which was established as an open-air concert space in the 1980s and featured a 30th anniversary show headlined by Aretha in 2015, Mayor Duggan revealed he would be "sending City Council a proposal to rename Chene Park" on Tuesday.

"Our beautiful waterfront jewel will be Aretha Franklin Park and when performers from generations to come from around the world come here they'll be reminded they are performing at the home of the Queen of Soul," he said.

Thursday's memorial concert featured performances from Gladys Knight and The Four Tops.
