The upcoming military drama uses the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier as one of its filming locations.

AceShowbiz - Paramount Pictures has added three more actors to the cast of its upcoming drama film "Top Gun: Maverick". Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Lewis Pullman, as Deadline reported, are set to play alongside Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller in the military action drama film.

It is still unknown what characters the newly-added cast members will play in the project, though. Cruise will reprise his role as hotshot pilot LT Pete Mitchell a.k.a. Maverick, while Kilmer will return to play Maverick's rival Tom Kazansky a.k.a. Iceman. Recently, the movie also added Monica Barbaro to play a pilot and a love interest to Teller's character, Bradley Bradshaw.

"Top Gun: Maverick" production took place aboard the Norfolk-based USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier this week. "The Navy is supporting one shoot this week aboard USS Abraham Lincoln, per a Production Assistance Agreement signed by Paramount (Pictures) and the Department of Defense," service spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Daniel Day told CNN.

"Our priority will always be warfighting, and training combat-ready Naval aviation forces, that being said, we believe we can support the film and simultaneously achieve training objectives," he continued.

According to Naval Air Force Atlantic spokesman Commander Dave Hecht, the movie crew was filming flying scenes, but Cruise and the other actors were not on board at that time. Hecht also stated that the movie's first installment inspired many people to voluntarily join the force to defend the United States.

" 'Top Gun' inspired countless men and women to volunteer to protect and defend our country as Naval aviators," he said. "And the crew of USS Abraham Lincoln are excited to play a small role in bringing this story back to the silver screen and inspiring another generation to serve in the world's finest Navy."

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise in "Oblivion", "Top Gun: Maverick" is a sequel to 1986's "Top Gun". Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz serve as the screenwriters, while Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the movie along with Cruise and Skydance's David Ellison.

"Top Gun: Maverick" is set to arrive in U.S. theaters on July 12, 2019.
