Some believe the actor could be a good successor for U.S. Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney's seat in the House of Representatives.

AceShowbiz - Democratic Party supporters in New York are reportedly eager for Richard Gere to step up his political activism and run for office.

The Pretty Woman star's name has started popping up during discussions about future party representatives among local officials in Westchester, where the 68 year old lives, and some believe Gere could be a good successor for U.S. Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney's seat in the House of Representatives if the politician's run for State Attorney General is successful.

"Richard Gere's name is being whispered about among Democrats," influential Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano tells the New York Post. "We'll see what he's made of."

The acting veteran is already a registered Democrat, and makes his presence in the community felt when it comes to polling day.

"Richard is real fun," smiles Ellen Kearns, assistant secretary of the Westchester County Democratic Party. "On Election Day he comes up to each election inspector and personally thanks us for our work."

However, the Buddhist star is unlikely to be interested in switching careers just now, amid speculation he is due to become a dad again. Gere wed Spanish publicist Alejandra Silva in April and this week, begs August 06, reports suggested his 35-year-old bride was pregnant with their first child together.
