The animated series will bring back classic characters Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex in new episodes.

AceShowbiz - Fans received a special surprise during 10th anniversary of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" at San Diego Comic-Con on July 19. Director Dave Filoni announced that the animated series would return for one last season featuring 12 new episodes on Disney's new streaming service. The announcement also came with the first trailer for the new season.

The new episodes will continue the plot from the original series, which explores the events before "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith". Classic characters such as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi will return, as well as the series' original characters like Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex.

Lucasfilm released an official announcement regarding the series' ending. It read, " 'The Clone Wars' ended after five broadcast seasons - just as Ahsoka left the Jedi Order. A few post-Season Five episodes were later released as 'The Lost Missions', but the story wasn't over. Fans have clamored for Disney and Lucasfilm to finish what was started ever since. And now it's actually happening."

In the trailer, the 501st is seen marching away into the smoke and leaving their helmets behind, while dialogues from previous seasons can be heard on the background sound. It appears that the voiceovers are there to remind fans of what happened. The dialogue in the first minutes is all lifted from moments of peace, when characters were introducing themselves and interacting with one another. In the next footage, Anakin and Obi-Wan appear to have a meeting with Ahsoka and Captain Rex.

Filoni didn't think that he would continue the series at first, but thanks to the loyal fans, he finally decided to work on it. "Well, thankfully, their enthusiasm is relentless. Their love of these characters and stories hasn't diminished," the director said in an interview for "Star Wars" official website. "I actually think their voice has gotten louder as the years have gone by. It's been very humbling to have their support and to have people continue to hashtag me, '#SaveTheCloneWars.' "

The 44-year-old director then went on to explain how he felt after he got the chance to finish the series. "Any opportunity to put the final pieces of the story in place is meaningful as a storyteller. I'm happy for the opportunity to define these things and the end of this part of 'The Clone Wars'. It also makes me reflect on all the people that I got to work with over the years," he said. "It reinforces the things I learned from George. It reminds me of the important elements that go into making 'Star Wars'. So, it's nice on several levels, and I think for the crew that's still here that worked on 'The Clone Wars', they feel that, as well."

However, Disney has yet to announce the animated series' launch date for its streaming service.
