The Joker origin movie, which has Todd Phillips attached as director, is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2019.

AceShowbiz - Warner Bros. has announced a release date and official title for a standalone Joker movie which recently cast Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. The movie, which is simply called "Joker", is slated to arrive on October 4, 2019 in the United States.

Phoenix officially signed up for the project last month after long speculations about his casting. Todd Phillips is on board to direct, in addition to writing the script along with Scott Silver. Filming reportedly begin in September in New York.

The origin movie is described as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film "is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content, which is described as being akin to a crime drama."

Besides the Joker origin movie, Warner Bros. and DC are developing another standalone movie centering on the Batman archnemesis. Jared Leto, who portrayed the character in 2016's "Suicide Squad", is set to reprise the role in the untitled film.

Phoenix recently told Collider about his and Leto's versions of Joker, "I think that genre, comic books, kind of lends itself to having different people play the same character and interpret it in a different way. It's kind of built into the source material in some ways. I think it's cool when people do that."

Joker will be Phoenix's first role in a comic book adaptation. The 43-year-old actor last graced the big screen with "Mary Magdalene", in which he stars opposite Rooney Mara and Chiwetel Ejiofor. He is currently playing in theaters in Gus Van Sant's "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot".
