'Let's go down to a border detention center together to better understand what's happening down there?! ' the country legend writes.

AceShowbiz - Country legend Willie Nelson has invited U.S. President Donald Trump to join him for a visit to a detention centre on the American border with Mexico to highlight the controversial treatment of illegal immigrants.

The singer has been among the many protesters calling on Trump administration officials to end their new 'zero-tolerance' immigration policy, which has led to officials separating thousands of parents from their kids after entering America illegally, and holding them in separate custody locations in recent weeks.

As the outcry reached fever pitch on Tuesday, June 19, Willie took to Twitter to send a personal message to Trump, urging him to take a trip to Nelson's home state of Texas to see for himself the poor conditions in which the desperate migrants are being held.

"Hey Donald this is @WillieNelson," the 85-year-old wrote on his wife Annie D'Angelo's social media account. "Let's go down to a border detention center together to better understand what's happening down there?! Let's talk!".

In a separate statement, the veteran musician expressed his anger at the immigration scandal and called on his fellow Christians to use their voices to speak out against the practice.

"What's going on at our southern border is outrageous," Willie declared. "Christians everywhere should be up in arms. What happened to 'Bring us your tired and weak and we will make them strong?' This is still the promised land."

Trump has not responded directly to Nelson's invite, but it appears he is giving in to the backlash, after a White House official announced the politician would be signing an order to end his policy of separating families at the U.S./Mexico border.
