AceShowbiz - The controversial video behind Childish Gambino's new track "This Is America" has helped rocket the tune to number one in the U.S. Actor Donald Glover's rap alter ego has hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time after landing the most streams and single sales of the past week.

The socially-conscious video accompanying the track launched shortly after Childish Gambino debuted "This Is America" on "Saturday Night Live" on May 5. Featuring scenes of gun violence, racism and police brutality, it quickly became a talking point and led to a surge of interest in the promo online.

The track ends Drake's 15-week reign at the top of the chart - "Nice for What" was number one for four weeks after "God's Plan" ruled for 11.

The run of "God's Plan", "Nice For What", and "This is America" makes history on the Hot 100, marking the first time three songs have consecutively debuted at number one.

Drake's "Nice For What" drops to two on the new countdown, while the rapper's "God's Plan" holds at three, and Post Malone's "Psycho", and Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" also dip to round out the new top five.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran's former six-week Hot 100 number one, "Perfect", returns to the top 10 at nine to become just the 10th title to have scored at least 26 weeks, or half a year, in the top 10. Sheeran also holds the record for the longest stay - his 2017 hit "Shape of You" spent 33 weeks in the top 10.
