'Black Panther' Continues Dominating Box Office With $108M in Second Weekend

Meanwhile, comedy 'Game Night' and sci-fi thriller 'Annihilation', newcomers this weekend, open to an estimated $16.6 million at No. 2 and $11 million at No. 4 respectively.

AceShowbiz - "Black Panther" continued its box office domination in North America this weekend. Disney and Marvel's superhero film starring Chadwick Boseman in the titular role remained strong at No. 1 and has scored one of the best second weekends of all time with an estimated $108 million in ticket sales.

According to studio estimates, the Ryan Coogler-directed Marvel hit is on track to rank among the highest-grossing blockbusters in history, becoming the fourth film to earn more than $100 million in its second weekend along with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($149.2 million), "Jurassic World" ($106.6 million) and "The Avengers" ($103.1 million).

In two weeks, "Black Panther" has grossed $400 million domestically and $704 million worldwide. Also starring Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, the movie has become the fifth highest grossing title domestically in the MCU and will shortly pass both "Captain America: Civil War" ($408M) and "Iron Man 3" ($409M).

"The movie continues to play ahead of our modeling," says Disney's film distribution head Dave Hollis. "It has become a cultural phenomenon," Hollis continues, adding, "This is a movie audiences were hoping for, and that delivered beyond expectations."

Among newcomers this weekend were New Line's R-rated comedy "Game Night" and Alex Garland's sci-fi thriller "Annihilation". The Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams-starring movie debuted at No.2 with approximately $16.6 million, while the Natalie Portman-led film opened to an estimated $11 million at No. 4.

Last week's runner up, Sony's live-action "Peter Rabbit", dropped to No. 3 in its third weekend, earning an additional $12.5 million. Rounding out the top five was Universal's "Fifty Shades Freed", the third and final installment of the trilogy based on E.L. James' books and starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, which bagged an estimated $6.9 million.
