AceShowbiz - Our official first look at "Bumblebee" is here. Paramount Pictures has released a new still via Empire which features the yellow robot in his car form, a Volkswagen Beetle. He's joined by his new human sidekick in the picture from the upcoming "Transformers" spin-off movie, a human named Charlie Watson who is played by %cHailee Steinfeld%.
The "Bumblebee" spin-off film is directed by Travis Knight, the boss of Laika Animation Studios as well as the director of the company's most recent film, "Kubo and the Two Strings". Speaking to the magazine, Knight reveals how "Bumblebee" is going to be different from Michael Bay's "Transformers" movies.
"I wanted to approach this massive, expansive franchise and really focus in on a tiny corner of the canvas," he tells the mag. The helmer adds, "Everything I've tried to do at Laika, searching for an artful blend of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, humour and heart, I wanted to bring to the 'Transformers' franchise."
Knight is directing "Bumblebee" from a script provided by Christina Hodson ("Shut In"). The film is set twenty years before the events of the first film, in 1987, when the beloved yellow Transformer takes refuge in a small California beach town junkyard. A teenage girl learns that it is no ordinary Volkswagen Beetle.
Steinfeld previously talked to Collider about the film, which she claimed would be a more character-driven film. "It takes place in the 80s, of course," she told the outlet. "And it's very character and storyline driven, which is a bit different, but it still has the elements that 'Transformers' fans love and will see in the movie."
"I play a character named Charlie Watson, who is a mechanic," the 20-year-old actress and singer dished on her character. "She's in high school. [She's] incredibly unique and strong and has - something I love about her is that a lot of people tend to underestimate her knowledge and she continuously proves herself and what she knows and creates this incredible relationship with this Transformer."
Steinfeld is joined by %cJohn Cena%, %cAbby Quinn%, %cPamela Adlon%, %cRicardo Hoyos%, %cGracie Dzienny%, %cJohn Ortiz%, %cJorge Lendeborg Jr.% and %cJason Drucker% in "Bumblebee", which is due out in U.S. theaters on December 21 next year.
