'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Heads to Netflix With Two-Season Order

Although the project, which was originally developed by The CW, has found its new home, Robert Aguirre-Sacasa is still attached to executive produce the new series on Netflix.

AceShowbiz - It's such a spellbinding twist! "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" TV adaptation is heading to Netflix as the streaming giant has given the yet-untitled "Riverdale" spin-off a magical two-season straight-to-series order. Each season will be having 20 episodes.

The spin-off, formerly known as "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", was initially developed on The CW as a potential companion to the network's hit teen series "Riverdale". Both "Riverdale" and the upcoming spin-off hail from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and are based on characters from the Archie Comic universe.

Although the project has found its new home, Aguirre-Sacasa is still attached to executive produce the series. Joining Aguirre-Sacasa are Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV who are the same team behind "Riverdale". Aguirre-Sacasa will pen the pilot of "Sabrina", with Lee Toland Krieger, who directed the pilot episode of "Riverdale", reprising his role in the "Sabrina" pilot. Aguirre-Sacasa and Krieger will also executive produce the series alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Archie Comics' Jon Goldwater.

Aguirre-Sacasa took to his Twitter account to share the news, writing, "Things are about to get a lot more CHILLING! #Sabrina #Netflix." Netflix also followed it up with a witty tweet, which read, "Sabrina is coming to Netflix and she might just out-brood Jughead. Don't @ me about talking cats (yet)."

Just like "Riverdale", the new series is set to take a macabre approach to it's source material. However, now that the new series is heading to different network, it remains to be seen whether "Sabrina" and "Riverdale" will share the same universe.

The move is somehow similar to when Netflix gave a two-season order to "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", which was originally picked up by NBC.

Netflix being interested in the "Riverdale" spin-off series doesn't come as surprise though. The viewership of The CW's dark, soapy drama was reportedly quadrupling during its season 2 after Netflix streams the series' freshman season on its platform.
