The third movie about the god of thunder made $122.7 million over the weekend, conquering the competition and indicating Hollywood's first big opening in several weeks.

"Thor: Ragnarok" is on its way to break the box office's period of slump with its outstanding $122.7 million in 4,080 North American locations. The debut weekend of the third "Thor" film is currently the fourth-largest debut of 2017, trailing behind "Beauty and the Beast (2017)" at $174.8 million, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" at $146.5 million and "It" at $123.4 million.
The film surpasses the openings of its previous installments, "Thor" at only $65.7 million and its 2013 sequel "Thor: The Dark World" at $85.7 million, as well as the newest addition of Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Spider-Man: Homecoming" at $117 million. Remarkably, the film received good reviews from audiences and critics. It also received an A CinemaScore. Rotten Tomatoes also scores the movie 93|percent| fresh, making it one of the most well-reviewed films of all Marvel Cinematic Universe titles.
The movie's success comes from director Taika Waititi's new vision and fresh atmosphere by bringing out the hilarious tone of the film, breaking the formula of previous "Thor" films. He also features other characters from Marvel Cinematic Universe such as The Hulk and Doctor Strange. Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis vouches for the film's success. "Because of the strength of the Marvel team, it affords the license to bring in storytellers that have the ability to infuse tone and style that keeps each of these films feeling unbelievably fresh. The $13 billion grossed by the 17 MCU titles averages out to $800 million per film globally. Just as impressive, if not more, is the consistency from a quality standpoint."
Following "Thor: Ragnarok", placing second on the box office is STXfilms' R-rated comedy "A Bad Moms Christmas" with $16.8 million. Previous two box office winners "Jigsaw" and "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" fall to the third and fourth places. "Jigsaw" plummets 60|percent| to $6.6 million and lifted its 10-day total to $28 million while "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" pushed its 17-day take to $4.5 million. Warner Bros.' "Geostorm" comes in fifth place with $3.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $28.8. million.
After a disappointing and continuous decline of movie opening gross in box office, "Thor: Ragnarok" may boost the opening of other upcoming big holiday titles such as "Justice League and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", which will be released weeks ahead.
