'Captain Marvel': Ben Mendelsohn Targeted for Villain Role
Movie

Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are reportedly in negotiations with the 'Ready Player One' actor for the superhero film's villain role.

AceShowbiz - It looks like "Captain Marvel" is close to casting its villain. According to a new report from Variety, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" actor Ben Mendelsohn is currently in negotiations with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck for the upcoming superhero movie's villain role.

Mendelsohn is expected to play the film's main antagonist, which would likely be the leader of the Skrulls. As teased by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige earlier this year, the aliens would be featured in the film. The studio has yet to comment on the casting report.

Should Mendelsohn be cast in "Captain Marvel", it will reunite him with Boden and Fleck. The "Bloodline" actor previously worked together with the filmmaking duo on 2015's "Mississippi Grind", in which he starred opposite the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Yvonne Landry.

"Captain Marvel" has Brie Larson starring as the titular character. Boden and Fleck will be directing the solo adventure about Carol Danvers, the Captain Marvel's name, from a script provided by Geneva Robertson-Dworet ("Tomb Raider").

Set to be released in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2019, the superhero film will follow Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection and flight.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Feige announced that the film would be set in the '90s, before the Avengers ever thought of assembling. Samuel L. Jackson is expected to reprise his role as Nick Fury. No other cast members have been announced as of now.

Mendelsohn is no stranger to playing villains. In addition to playing Director Orson Krennic in "Rogue One", the Golden Globe-nominated actor stars as the Sheriff of Nottingham in upcoming "Robin Hood: Origins", which is set for a September 21, 2018 release. He can next be seen in Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One", which opens on March 30 next year.
