The Freddie Highmore-starring medical drama, which follows a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, is the second series to get a back nine pickup, following 'Young Sheldon'.

AceShowbiz - ABC has decided to give a full-season order to Freddie Highmore-starring medical series "The Good Doctor", ordering nine more episodes that bring it to a standard 22-episode season. The back nine order comes after the new breakout series aired its first 2 episodes with solid ratings.

"We are thrilled to announce that we are giving our viewers additional episodes of 'The Good Doctor'," said Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment. "We have an amazing team in front of and behind the camera, led by Freddie Highmore's incredibly nuanced performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, and we're confident the show will continue to captivate our audience."

The freshman series premiered with an impressive 2.2. rating among adults 18-49 as well as nabbed 11.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen Live+Same Day data. "The Good Doctor" continues to get stronger as the second episode pulled in bigger viewers, netting a 2.4 rating and 11.5 million viewers.

Based on 2013's South Korean series of the same name, "The Good Doctor" follows Highmore's Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. He relocates from a quiet country life to join the prestigious St. Bonaventure hospital's surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues. Also starring on the series are Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzales, Chuky Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff and Tamlyn Tomita.

Hailing from "House M.D." creator David Shore and former "Hawaii Five-0" star Daniel Dae Kim, the series was initially developed by CBS Television Studios in 2015 before it landed at Sony Pictures Television Studios and ABC Studios. It marks the second series of the 2017-2018 season to receive a back nine pickup after CBS' "Young Sheldon".

"The Good Doctor" airs on Mondays at 10 P.M. on ABC.
