Country music stars and fans united to honor the victims of the Las Vegas shooting that took place during the Route 91 Harvest Festival at Mandala Bay in Las Vegas late Sunday night, October 1. They held a vigil in Nashville on Monday evening, with Keith Urban, Vince Gill, Amy Grant and Alison Krauss among the stars supporting the event.
Urban took the stage to perform a cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water". He shared a poignant moment before the performance. "I started this morning by finding out about it and being shell-shocked all morning, getting my kids ready for school," he said. "My 9-year-old, as I was driving her to school this morning, said to me, 'Dad, you seem quiet.' I said, 'Yeah, a lot of people [were] killed last night.' "
He continued, "She said, 'Did you know any of them?' and I said, 'Not that I know of.' Then she said, 'Then why are you so sad?' I said, 'First of all, these were innocent people horrifically taken, and secondly, they're like family.' It's the one thing about country music that's always been the center of it -- it is community. So I did know those people, in that way."
Gill said, "I'm honored to be here as a voice for the innocent. May we never lose our voice for innocent people," before singing "Go Rest High on That Mountain". He then welcomed his wife, Amy Grant, to the stage.
She asked the crowd to bow their heads as she led a moment of silence and a prayer. "Thank you that none of us is born alone or dies alone," she said.
A shooter opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Sunday night, where Jason Aldean, Jake Owen, Big & Rich and more were booked to perform. At least 50 people were killed and more than 400 people were injured in the incident, which has been dubbed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
