Big & Rich is an American country music duo that emerged from Nashville, Tennessee, in 1998, composed of the talented musicians Big Kenny and John Rich. They are renowned for their unique blend of country music that incorporates elements of rock and hip-hop, which set them apart in the genre. Their breakout single, "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy," from their debut album, "Horse of a Different Color," released in 2004, catapulted them into the spotlight and established them as significant figures in the country music scene.
Before forming the duo, John Rich was known as the bass guitarist for the country band Lonestar, while Big Kenny had a stint as a solo artist under Hollywood Records. Their collaboration marked a new chapter in their careers, and they quickly gained recognition for their energetic performances and catchy tunes. "Horse of a Different Color" produced several hits, including four consecutive Top 40 singles, with "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" reaching number 11 on the charts. The album featured collaborations with artists like Cowboy Troy, Gretchen Wilson, and Martina McBride, showcasing their ability to blend diverse musical influences.
In November 2005, the duo released their second studio album, "Comin' to Your City," which continued their success with the Vietnam War-inspired single "8th of November" and additional Top 40 hits. This album also saw contributions from Cowboy Troy, Gretchen Wilson, and the legendary Kris Kristofferson. Following this, their third album, "Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace," released in 2007, produced their only number one single, "Lost in This Moment," further solidifying their status in the industry.
After the success of their third album, Big & Rich took a hiatus and pursued solo projects in 2009. Big Kenny released "The Quiet Times of a Rock and Roll Farm Boy," while John Rich's "Son of a Preacher Man" both achieved Top 40 entries. Kenny's single "Long After I'm Gone" and Rich's "Shuttin' Detroit Down" marked their successful forays into solo artistry. In 2010, Kenny followed up with another solo album, "Big Kenny's Love Everybody Traveling Musical Medicine Show Mix Tape, Vol. 1," while Rich released two extended plays in 2011, one of which included the Top 40 hit "Country Done Come to Town."
The duo reunited in May 2011 to record "Fake ID," which was featured in the soundtrack of the film Footloose. In 2012, they released their fourth album, "Hillbilly Jedi," which included the Top 20 hit "That's Why I Pray." Their continued evolution in the industry led them to announce their fifth studio album, "Gravity," which was released independently in 2013. This was followed by another independent album, "Did it For the Party," announced in 2017, with "California" as its lead single.
Throughout their career, Big & Rich have not only made significant contributions to country music but have also remained influential figures, known for their distinctive sound and energetic performances. Their ability to blend genres and collaborate with various artists has ensured their enduring presence in the music industry, and they continue to inspire new generations of musicians.
