'Annabelle: Creation' Creeps Its Way to Top Spot at Box Office

Despite a lower opening than its predecessor, the 'Annabelle' sequel easily wins at the chart due to low competition.

AceShowbiz - "Annabelle: Creation" debuted to an estimated $35 million at North American box office. The horror sequel to 2014's "Annabelle" easily wins at the chart this week as the summer movie fare continues to fade.

"Annabelle: Creation" has the lowest opening of the franchise, behind 2013's "The Conjuring" ($40.4 million), 2016's "The Conjuring 2" ($41.9 million) and "Annabelle" ($37.1 million). Still, the $35 million opening is a strong start for a movie which cost a modest $15 million to make.

"We're absolutely thrilled and elated that audiences really embraced Annabelle," says Warner Bros. Pictures distribution chief Jeff Goldstein. "She is just one horrible doll." He adds, "We would have been happy to hit $30 million, considering the sluggish marketplace."

The movie received mostly positive reviews from critics, but it earned only a B rating on CinemaScore. Females made up the majority of the audience (52|percent|), with 46|percent| of ticker buyers under the age of 25.

"Dunkirk" is staying steady at No. 2 with additional $11.4 million or dropping only 33.4|percent| from last week. Newcomer "The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature" entered the chart at No. 3, collecting an estimated $8.9 million, lower than analysts' expectations of $12 million to $15 million.

The follow-up to 2014's "The Nut Job" failed to impress moviegoers despite bringing back its star-studded cast, which includes Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl and Maya Rudolph. The first movie opened with $19 million and went on to earn $64 million domestically, making it Open Road's highest-grossing film.

After a disappointing debut, "The Dark Tower" falls from the top spot to No. 4 with approximately $7.9 million (down 58.9|percent|). "The Emoji Movie" drops two spots to No. 5 with an estimated $6.6 million (down 45|percent|).

Another newcomer, "The Glass Castle" starring Brie Larson, cracks the top 10 with an estimated $4.9 million, which is a strong start since it opened in just 1,461 theaters, smaller than many of its competitors.
